‘I found a car park in Elephant and Castle, south London, with a roof covered in pigeon poo. I walked in and thought, “This is it!”’My mate phoned me and said I had to hear Funkin With the Drums Again by Farley Jackmaster Funk. It was a “Wow!” moment – the first time I ever heard house. In those early days, round about 1986, Judge Jules, Jazzie B and Norman Jay would wire up sound systems and play records until the cops turned up.
